Hand, cabin or carry-on luggage is the luggage you are taking with you on board an aircraft. Airlines determine the quantity, weight and dimensions of hand luggage. On the website of the airline you choose, check limitations, weight and amount of hand luggage that you choose for flight.

Categories of items forbidden on board:

  • firearms and other objects which may fire off missiles and cause serious injury;
  • sharp / pointed objects with cutter or sharpened point which can cause serious injury;
  • workmen’s tools that can be used for serious injury or threat to the safety of the airplane;
  • blunt objects which can cause serious injury when hit with them;
  • explosives, flammable materials and devices that can cause serious injury or a threat to the safety of the airplane;
  • chemicals and toxic substances.

Passengers may carry liquids above if they are properly packed in checked baggage. For more information, contact the carrier’s office or at the airport staff.

Airlines determine the quantity, weight and dimensions of free hand luggage. Anything above the prescribed characteristics of hand luggage at an additional charge. Information about the amounts and conditions applicable to transport excess baggage at designated airline.

Liquids, aerosols and gels (LAGs)* in hand baggage:

  • All liquids, aerosols and gels (LAGs) carried must be in individual containers of volume no more than 100ml (3.4 ounces)
  • All containers should then be placed in a single, transparent, re-sealable plastic bag of up to 20cm x 20cm with a total capacity of up to 1 litre. (see picture below)
  • You must be able to completely close the bag and be able to fit it in your hand baggage
  • Only 1 bag per passenger is allowed
  • The bag of liquids must be taken out of other hand baggage to be screened separately at security control

*LAGs include but are not limited to:

  • water and other drinks, soups, syrups, jams, stews, sauces and pastes
  • foods in sauces or containing a high liquid content including honey, marmite etc.
  • creams, lotions, cosmetics and oils including face creams, foundation, sunblock, and roll-on deodorants
  • perfumes
  • gels including hair and shower gels
  • contents of pressurized containers, including shaving foam, other foam and deodorants
  • pastes including toothpaste
  • mascara and eyeliner
  • liquid soaps lipsticks, lip gloss or lip balm and
  • any item of similar consistency at room temperature.

Exemptions:

Some items are exempted from the 100 ml or 100 g (3.4 oz) limit and do not have to be placed in a plastic bag. However, you must declare these items to the screening officer for inspection. The exceptions are:

Baby food and milk

If you are travelling with an infant you are allowed to carry as much baby milk, powdered milk, sterilised water and baby food as required for your flight, even if this exceeds the usual limit on liquids. These do not need to fit in the transparent bag but you should have them ready for inspection by airport security.

Liquid medicines:

You are allowed to carry liquid medicine as required for your flight. The medicine does not need to fit in the transparent bag but you should have it ready for inspection by airport security. You should also have supporting documentation from a relevant medical professional (for example a letter from your doctor or a copy of your prescription).

Airport staff might need to open the containers to screen the liquids at the security point.
